ಇದು ಒಂದು ಜಾನಪದ ನಾಟಕ. ಕೆಲವೇ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳಿರುವ ಸರಳ ಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಮಾಡಬಹುದಾದ ನಾಟಕ. ನಾಟಕದ ವಸ್ತು ಮತ್ತು ವಿಷಯ ಗೌತಮ ಬುದ್ದನ ಬಾಲ್ಯ ಜೀವನ . ಗೌತಮ ಬುದ್ದನ ಬಾಲ್ಯದ ಹೆಸರು, ಸಿದ್ದಾರ್ಥ. ಅವನು ಚಿಕ್ಕಂದಿನಿಂದಲೇ ಅಹಿಂಸೆಯನ್ನು ಇಷ್ಟಪಟ್ಟು ಪಾಲಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದನು. ಕೊಲ್ಲುವವನಿಗಿಂತ ಕಾಯುವವನೇ ಹೇಗೆ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಟವೋ ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಅವನಿಗೆ ಅದರ ಮೇಲೆ ಅಧಿಕಾರ ಎನ್ನುವುದನ್ನು ಈ ನಾಟಕವು ಪ್ರತಿಬಿಂಬಿಸುತ್ತದೆ, ಶುದ್ದೋದನನು ಕಪಿಲ ವಸ್ರು ಎಂಬ ಊರಿನ ರಾಜ ಸಿದ್ದಾರ್ಥ ಅವನ ಮಗ ಮತ್ತು ಯುವ ರಾಜಕುಮಾರ . ದೇವದತ್ತ ಸಿದ್ದಾರ್ಥನ ಸೋದರ ಸಂಬಂಧಿ . ಒಮ್ಮೆಸಿದ್ದಾರ್ಥ ಮತ್ತು ದೇವದತ್ತ ತೋಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಟವಾಡುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ದೇವದತ್ತನು ಅಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಒಂದು ಸುಂದರವಾದ ಬಿಳಿಯ ಹಂಸಕ್ಕೆ ಗುರಿಯಿಟ್ಟು ಬಾಣ ಬಿಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಗುರಿತಾಗಿ ಹಂಸವು ನೋವಿನಿಂದ ನರಳುತ್ತಾ ನೆಲದ ಮೇಲೆ ಬೀಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಆಗ ಅಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಸಿದ್ದಾರ್ಥ ಅದನ್ನು ಎತ್ತಿಕೊಂಡು ಗಾಯವನ್ನು ತೊಳೆದು, ಔಷಧಿ ಹಾಕಿ ಉಪಚರಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಕೆಲವು ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅದು ಚೇತರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ. ದೇವದತ್ತ ಆ ಹಂಸವು ತನಗೆ ಸೇರಬೇಕಾದದ್ದು ಎದು ಕೇಳಿದಾಗ ಸಿದ್ದಾರ್ಥನು ತಾನು ರಕ್ಷಿಸಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ಅದು ತನಗೆ ಸೇರಬೇಕು ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾನೆ, ಇಬ್ಬರಿಗೂ ವಾದ ವಿವಾದಗಳಾಗಿ ಕೊನೆಗೆ ದೇವದತ್ತನು ಈ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಯನ್ನು ರಾಜಸಭೆಗೆ ತರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ರಾಜಸಭೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವದತ್ತನು ರಾಜನಿಗೆ ನಡೆದುದೆಲ್ಲವನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಆಗ ಸಿದ್ದಾರ್ಥನನ್ನು ಕರೆಸಿ ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇಬ್ಬರ ವಾದವೂ ಅವರವರ ರೀತಿ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಹೇಗೆ ತೀರ್ಮಾನ ಮಾಡುವುದು . ಹಂಸ ಯಾರಿಗೆ ಸೇರಬೇಕು. ಆಗ ರಾಜನು ತನ್ನ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಮಂತ್ರಿಗೆ ಇದನ್ನು ತೀರ್ಮಾನಿಸಲು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿಯು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಯೋಚಿಸಿ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಈ ನಿರ್ಣಯವನು ಹಂಸವೇ ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ನಂತರ ಸಿದ್ದಾರ್ಥನಿಗೆ ಆ ಹಂಸವನ್ನು ಒಂದು ಕುರ್ಚಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಇಡಲು ಹೇಳುತ್ತನೆ. ಸಿದ್ದಾರ್ಥನು ಇಡುವನು. ದೇವದತ್ತನು ಹಂಸ ಪಕ್ಷಿಯನ್ನು ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅದು ಭಯದಿಂದ ನಡುಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಮತ್ತು ಹೆದರಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ಕಿರುಚುತ್ತದೆ. ಅವನು ಹಿಂದ ಬಂದ ಮೇಲೆ ಸಿದ್ದಾರ್ಥನು ಹೋಗಿ ಹಂಸಪಕ್ಷಿಗೆ ಸಾಂತ್ವನ ಮಾಡಿ ಹೆದರಬೇಡ, ನಾನು ಬಂದಿರುವೆ, ಬಾ ಎಂದು ಕರೆದಾಗ ತಕ್ಷಣವೇ ಅವನ ತೋಳುಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಬಂದು ಕೂರುತ್ತದೆ. ಆಗ ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿಯು ರಾಜನಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ಎಲ್ಲರನ್ನೂ ಕುರಿತು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ನೋಡಿ ಹಂಸವೇ ತನ್ನ ಒಡೆಯನನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಿದೆ. ಇದನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಈ ತೀರ್ಮಾನ ಒಪ್ಪಿಗೆಯಾಗಿ ಜಯಕಾರವನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಹಂಸ ಪಕ್ಷಿಯು ಸಿದ್ದಾರ್ಥನದಾಗುತ್ತದೆ,
