I.) Comprehension : A. Answer the following questions in one or two sentences each:-

1.) What was the name of the beautiful princess of Pragjyotisha?
Answer: Amritaprabha was the name of the beautiful princes of Pragiyotisha.
 
2.) What was arranged for her, when she attained the age of marriage?
Answer: The king arranged Swayamvara to enable her to choose her husband when she attained the age of marriage.
 
3.) Who was Meghavahana?
Answer: Meghavahana was the great-grandson of a former king of Kashmir.
 
4.) Why did the priest cry out in surprise?
Answer: The parasol of Varuna has cast its shadow over the prince hence the priest cried out in surprise.
 
5.) What was the uniqueness of the Parasol?
Answer: The uniqueness of the Parasol was it casts its shadow on a sovereign of the whole world only.

Answer: Meghavahana witness that some sort of human sacrifice in progress on the steps of the temple of Chandika (Durga). A man laying on the ground, his arms raised for mercy and a menacing-looking barbarian stood over him, brandishing his sword.

Answer: The son of barbarian was fallen prey to some disease and he is dying on the bed. If barbarian kills this man, the gods will be pleased and save his son’s life, this is the reason that the barbarian wanted to kill an innocent man.
 
11.) How did Meghavahana rescue both the victim and the barbarian’s son?
Answer: Meghavahana offered his body in sacrifice to Chandika, thus he rescue both the victim and the barbarian’s son.
 
12.) What happened when Meghavahana was about to strike himself?
Answer: When Meghavahana was about to strike himself  his head covered with divine flowers of exquisite colour and perfume and someone held back his arm.
 
B.) Answer the following in about 150-200 words each:

1.) Describe the incident of how Meghavahana got the heavenly parasol.
Answer: When Amritaprabha came into age her father King Pragyajyotisha arranged her Swayanvar. In the Swayanvar she chooses Meghavahana as her husband by putting a garland around his neck. When Amritaprabha and Meghavahana move toward king for blessings the priest cries that the parasol of Varuna has casting its shadow over the prince! The parasol surprises Meghavahana, he also wonders about its meaning. He sees a beautiful, dazzling white parasol with exquisite decorations that was casting its shadow over him. Then the kings explains him that it is the parasol of Varuna who is the lord of seas and casts its shadow on only a sovereign of the whole world. Thus, Meghavahana got the heavenly parasol.
 
2.) How did Varuna, the Lord of the Seas, test Meghavahana’s nobility of mind?
Answer: When the Meghavahana was on an expedition near the sea, he tells his army to rest in the shade of some palm groves and he starts thinking that how to conquer the island of Lanka. Suddenly he hears the cry in the air and he runs toward it. He hears that someone saying that, “Even under Meghavahana’s rule. I have been slain!” Meghavahana himself run toward the voice without waiting for his officer. When he goes under the woods he finds that in the temple of Chandika (Durga) and some kind of human sacrifice is in progress on the steps of the temple. A man is on the ground and asking for mercy and barbarian standing over him brandishing his sword. Barbarian tell him that his son is fallen prey to some disease and he is on death bed. If Barbarian sacrifice this man, then the gods will be pleased and save his son’s life. If Meghavahana prevent sacrifice then the son of barbarian will die. At this point Meghavahana offer himself for sacrifice and try to kill himself then the strike turns into flowers of exquisite colour and perfume and someone hold back his arm. Thus, the lord of the seas Varuna test Meghavahana’s nobility of mind.
