RAIN IN SUMMER - Class 6 First Language English Textbook Solutions

Pre-reading task :

Have you experienced heavy rains? On the west coast, it rains heavily for days together.

Answer: Yes,I have experienced heavy rains.

1.) What do people do when it rains heavily?
Answer: People stay at home when it rains heavily.

2.) Do they sit inside their houses?
Answer: Yes, they do sit inside their houses.

3.) Do they go out and work?
Answer: Unless there is something urgent, they don’t go and work.

4.) Do they enjoy working in the rain?
Answer: No, they don’t really enjoy working in the rain.

1.) Talk to your partner about these points in the poem. Give him / her your reasons for what you say. Write down what you say.

a.) The poet says it was dusty and hot. What was dusty and hot? What does the rain do?
Answer: The broad and fiery street and the narrow lane is dusty and hot. It gushes and struggles out from the throat of the overflowing spout and makes the weather cool.

b.) The poet is watching the rain from his portico. (true / not true)
Answer:  True

c.) When do raindrops clatter on the roof?
1.) Whenever heavy raindrops fall.
2.) When it is drizzling steadily.
3.) When there is a heavy downpour.

d.) The clatter sounds like a tramp of hoofs. So we may say that the poet’s house has

3.) a reinforced concrete roof
4.) a thatched roof.

e.) Where does the rain water flow? How does it flow?
Answer:  The rain water flows in the gutter. It flows like a roaring river with muddy tide.

f.) Why does the poet welcome the rain?
Answer: Rain brings the coolness in the hot summer time. It makes the dust wipe away. It takes away the heat by bringing coolness.

2.) Explain the meaning of the following phrases to your partner :

a.) fiery street- The summer sun made the street so hot that it felt like fire.
b.) gush and struggle out. – It rained heavily so much that the rain water had to struggle to come out. The water was in such force that it threw all the dust from the rooftop and in the pipe

3.) Imagine what Longfellow saw, heard, felt, smelt and thought. Tell that to your partner. Write down what you say. Begin like this
The sun was hot. There was dust everywhere. Suddenly there was the sound of the raindrops. With that came the smell of the hot earth. The rain clatters on the roof. Water came out with much force taking dust from the pipe. Heavy rain poured its water on the window panes. The heavy rain flowed like river water.

4.) The poet uses two similes. Tell your partner why you like them, or do not like them.

1.) Like the tramp of hoofs  –  Here the poet has compared the raindrops to the running horses.
2) Like a river down the gutter roars- Here the poet has compared the flow of water through the gutter to the river flowing

Writing :

5.) Imagine for a moment what a heavy down pour does to the city slum-dwellers. Write six sentences about their woes.

Answer: The slum-dwellers suffer the worst in heavy down pour. Everything is washed away in the down pour. They don’t even have another option to go. People get scared in such horrible condition. Also there occurs a major problem of electricity in such situation. They have no basic amenities in such times.

6.) A long phrase is given below. Some words are incomplete. Complete them.
The beautifully pouring, flowing, roaring and cleaning welcome rain !
Ask your partner what words go in the blanks in the pas­sage given below, and write them down.

Imagine, for a moment, an Indian farmer, sitting in his farm and looking up at a cloud less sky. He would be shading his eyes from the bright sunlight with his hand and wondering where have all the clouds gone. When it rains, it will water the parched and cracked earth and ready it for tilling. It gives life for the dying crops. The farmer will be happy. But in this poem, you will see a different kind of person, a city dweller. He is standing at the window of his study, watching the rain outside. He says rain ispouring down.
