I.) Comprehension :

A.) Answer the following in two or three sentences each :

1.) Who was Gopal Rao? How can you say that he was a progressive thinker?
Answer: Gopal Rao was the husband of Anandi Gopal Rao and he started to teach Anandi after marriage. He also insisted Anandi for higher education. Gopal Rao was the supporter of women’s education and widow remarriage.
 
2.) “ I decided that I would like to be a doctor.” What made Anandi bai decide this?
Answer: When Anandi was thinking about to take higher education she observed that there is no female doctors in India. There are many women who were hesitating to go to male doctor and suffering from health issues. Anandi herself had lost her infant son when Anandi was fourteen years old. Hence, Anandi decide to be a doctor.
 
3.) How did Mrs. Carpenter help Anandibai pursue her studies in medicine?
Answer: Anandi and Gopal Rao try for admission in some university in America. Anandi get admission but Gopal Rao doesn’t. When Mrs. Carpenter of Roselle, new Jersey came to know about the story of Anandi, she offer to host her in America.
 
4.) How did the Superintendent and Secretary of the college help Anandibai?
Answer: The superintendent and secretary of college impressed by the Anandi and her struggle to get education and to come so far from motherland, her bravery, poverty and opposition. Hence they offers her a scholarship of $600 for three years.
 
5.) Describe the college room provided to Anandibai.
Answer: The collage room was not having proper fireplace and it was emitting a lot of smoke when lit.
 
6.) Why did Anandibai stay in Pune?
Answer: Anadibai was receiving treatment from a renowned Ayurvedic specialist for Tuberculosis so she stayed in Pune.

1.) Explain how Gopal Rao encouraged Anandibai to become a doctor.
Answer: Gopal Rao started to teach Anandi after marriage. He also insisted her to take higher education. Gopal Rao was also supporter of widow remarriage. Gopal Rao also tried hard to get admission in university in America to pursue degree in medicine for Anandibai.
 
2.) What were the things which Anandibai found strange in America?
Answer: Anandibai found many strange things in America. The family of Carpenter was not having bath everyday. Anandibai also found differences in culture, food habits and lifestyle in America.
 
3.) How did Anandibai face the alien culture and cold winter?
Answer: It was very difficult to adjust with the alien culture and cold winter in America. The smoke was also being emitted from the fireplace in her room, Anandibai wat getting frequent cold and temperature. Her health was severely affecting and deteriorating day by day.
 
4.) Describe Anandi’s journey back to India.
Answer: When Anandi was coming back to India on the ship the doctors refused to treat a brown woman. After reaching India Anandi stayed at her cousin’s place in Pune to receive treatment from a renowned Ayurvedic specialist but the Ayurvedic specialist refused to treat her as she had crossed the boundaries of society.
 
5.) Describe the great qualities of Anandibai that you like the most.
Answer: Anandibai was strong woman. She was determined to get education and higher education in medical field by facing resistance from society. She was married in early age and also lost her infant son at the age of fourteen but she didn’t loose hope and keep studying.
 
C.) Answer the following in about ten sentences each:

1.) How did Anandibai become a doctor in spite of the obstacles she faced?
Answer: Anandibai faced many challenges to become a doctor. She struggled to get education then she decided to get higher education in medical field. She got admission in one of a university in America. She was going alone to America. Her husband Gopal Rao was not going with her. Anandi’s family faced lots of criticism and opposition for it. In American culture was alien culture for her. The room she was staying was always emitted smoke at the fireplace and she was not having enough money to get better room. Hence, she stayed in room with cold and smoke. In America the food habits were different and the climate was not suitable for her and her health was worsening. But against all odds she finished her final exams. At the convocation, she was given standing ovation for becoming the first Indian woman doctor.
 
2.) Anandibai is an inspiration to Indian girls to this day. Discuss.
Answer: Anandibai fight the situation and became the doctor, it is the inspiration for girls to get education against all odds. Anandibai was mentally strong and determined to her goal. She faced sorrow in her life when she married at the age of nine and lost her first infant son at the age of fourteen. But her husband encouraged her to study and get higher education. Her husband Gopal Rao sent her America to get education and become a doctor. But due to the situations in America she faced health issues. She got medical degree by studying hard. She became the first Indian woman to get education abroad and the first Indian woman to become a doctor.
