He poured some of the water over himself, so that he was dripping. He threw some water over the hornets, so that they too were dripping. Then he put the calabash on his head, as though to protect himself from a storm, and called out to the hornets and asked why there were staying in the rain. Then the hornest asked where shall they go on which Anansi told them to get into the dry gourd. Then the hornets thanked him and flew into the gourd through the small hole. And finally when all of them entered in the gourd, he plugged the hole with a ball of grass.
2) Explain how the python got trapped.
Answer: Anansi went to the forest and cut a long bamboo pole and some strong vines. Then he walked toward the house of Onini, the python. He talked to himself saying that his wife was stupid to think that the python was shorter and weaker than the bamboo. And Anansi disagreed with his wife. All this muttering of Anansi was heard by the python and he suggested him to measure against the bamboo. Anansi agreed and started to measure the python and said that he was stretching at one end. Then Anansi very smartly tied the python to the pole saying that in that way he wouldn’t slip and in this way he trapped the python.
3) What method did the spider Kwaku Anansi adopt to get the leopard demanded as a price for the ownership of all tales and stories of the world?
Answer: Anansi went into the forest and dug a deep pit where the leopard was accustomed to walk. Then he covered it with small branches and leaves and put dust on it, so that it was impossible to tell where the pit was. He went away and hid. Osebo came prowling in the black night and he stepped into the trap Anansi had prepared and fell to the bottom. Next morning when Anansi went to the pit, he saw the leopard there. Anansi asked the leopard what he was doing there to which the leopard replied that he was fallen into a trap. Anansi promised the leopard to take him out. He bent a tall tree toward the ground so that its top was over the pit, and he tied it that way. Then he tied a rope to the tree and dropped the other end of it into the pit. After that he asked the leopard to tie his tail. And he took his knife and cut the other rope, the one that held the tree bowed to the ground. The tree straightened up with a snap pulling the leopard out of the hole. He hung in the air head downward, twisting and turning. And while he hung this way, Anansi killed him with his weapons.
C3.) Read the following statement carefully, and in pairs, discuss the points you would like to include in your justification. Elaborate each point.
“With wisdom and knowledge one can achieve the impossible.” Justify the statement with reference to Kwaku Anansi, the spider.
Answer: With wisdom and knowledge one can surely achieve things that seem to be impossible to achieve. In the learnt story, we come to know how a little creature, Anansi, the spider made tree big creatures to fall in his trap. The spider used only his wit and smart tricks to get the three creatures into the trap. What seem to be impossible by the great warriors and chiefs to achieve was achieved by the little creature only by using his wits. It is not about the physical strength but it is about the way one uses its knowledge to achieve things. With right use of the knowledge one can achieve things.
