II) COMPREHENSION

A.) Answer the following questions in one or two sentences each.

1.) How would Shravana carry his parents?

Answer: Shravana carried his parents in two baskets (kavadi).

2.) Where did Shravana’s parents want their son to take them?

Answer: Shravana’s parents wanted their son to take them on a pilgrimage.

3.) Where did they want to rest on the way?
Answer: They wanted to rest near a river bank on the way.

4.) Why did Shravana go out in the night?

Answer: Shravana’s parents were thirsty and there was no water in their hut. Shravana told them that he would go and fetch some water from the river so he went out in the night.

5.) Who killed Shravana?

Answer: Dasharatha killed Shravana.

6.) What did Dasharatha realize later on?
Answer:  Dasharatha shot his arrow in the direction of Shravana. Dasharatha didn’t know that there was a human on the other side and not any animal and this is what he realized when he heard the cry of Shravana from the other side.

7.) Who took a pot of water to the old couple?
Answer: Dasharatha took a pot of water to the old couple.

8.) Who cursed Dasharatha? What was the curse?

Answer: Sharavana’s parents cursed Dasharatha. They cursed Dashratha saying that since he was responsible for their sorrow, he too would die like them one day. He too would be suffering the pain of separation from his son.

9.) How did the old parent’s curse come true?
Answer: After a long time, Dashratha’s son Shri Rama left him in Ayodhya and went to live in the forest, in this way the old parent’s curse came true.

B.) Read the statements and answer the questions that follow.

Answer: Dasharatha took his arrow.

Answer: The sound was of water filling the pot.

2.) “He rushed to the other side of the river and found a wounded boy crying in pain.”

a.) Who rushed to the other side of the river ?

Answer: Dasharatha rushed to the other side of the river.

b.) Why did he rush to the other side?

Answer: Dasharatha realized that he had hurt a human by mistake so he rushed to see the boy to the other side.

c.) Who was the wounded boy?
Answer: Shravana Kumara was the wounded boy.

3.) “Oh King, you are responsible for our sorrow.”

a.) Who said this?

Answer: Shravana Kumara’s parents said this.

b.) What was their sorrow?

Answer: Their only son Shravana Kumara was killed by Dashratha and this was their sorrow.

c.) What was the effect of their sorrow on the king?
Answer: Shravana Kumar’s parents cursed the king that he too would suffer the pain of separation from his son and this curse came true when Dashratha’s son Ram left him and went away from him.

III) LANGUAGE

A.) Fill in the blanks using the words / phrases doing, to do, anddone. Use the correct tense form.
